I’m real-world expertise

I'm Robert Walters

Before Robert Walters, I was a tax analyst at a global MNC. Pursuing a career in recruitment never crossed my mind until a former colleague who’d made the switch reached out and asked if I’d be interested. On paper, my experiences didn’t seem applicable. But the idea intrigued me enough that I decided to connect with the management team at Robert Walters. I was so impressed with the professionalism they displayed during the interview process that I wound up taking up the job.

Career switches can be stressful. I definitely stepped into my new role as a recruitment consultant with some self-doubt, especially since it was so different from back-end tax. Previously my job scope revolved around dealing with paperwork and churning out monthly reports in the back office. Going from that to speaking with clients and candidates every day was a huge shift. What’s more, I knew little about the digital roles I needed to recruit for. I had to learn fast, but I told myself, “I have the interest and passion for the digital industry, and I’m willing to step outside my comfort zone!”

What I quickly discovered was that I could draw upon what I’d learned from my past experience as a tax analyst, even as I was now embedded in the digital sector! I could size up companies and understand how they operate, and I knew how to discern market movements and pick up industry insights. Thankfully, the team at Robert Walters was also really welcoming, and the training programme was well-designed and comprehensive. All of that helped make for a smooth transition.

From as early on as the interview process, my manager had a vision of the consultant I might grow to be. Today, I feel proud that I've materialised that vision. Starting with the satisfaction of achieving my targets, I developed a passion for the digital industry and assisting people and organisations with anything related to talent and career development. Most importantly, I've advanced into a managerial role, leading a team of determined and dedicated consultants. On a personal level, it’s also gratifying to see how this career switch has made me a more confident, entrepreneurial person.

So, if you’re a professional who’s interested in recruitment but worry you don’t have the relevant experience, don’t count yourself out. This is an organisation that sees your diverse real-world experience as a strength. As long as you have the drive and motivation, the knowledge and skillsets you’ve nurtured can fuel your success as a recruiter in unexpected ways.
