I'm building every day

I'm Robert Walters

After graduating in Psychology at Durham University, I worked for a company trading on behalf of clients but didn’t feel like I had enough face time with clients so I was looking for something new. I was approached by the Talent Acquisition Team at Robert Walters to consider a role in Operations, Risk and Compliance. At that time, I didn’t know much about recruitment and, to be honest, didn’t think it would challenge me enough or align with my career aspirations. But after meeting the directors, I learnt it was so much more than what I thought and accepted a role in the Compliance Team.

Since joining Robert Walters, my personal progression has been amazing. Due to the platform Robert Walters offers and its well-established business network, I billed over £100k in my second quarter, having no prior recruitment experience, and I developed multiple relationships quickly and organically. The company rewards high-performers, and I have been promoted 3 times in the 6 years working with Robert Walters, most recently to Senior Manager whilst on maternity leave. From solely focusing on recruitment within Compliance, I’ve progressed to take on a management role across Risk, Compliance & Financial Crime.

Robert Walters offers an incredible and thorough training programme, not just for new joiners, but for more experienced consultants and managers too. I have been fortunate to attend many internal and external training sessions which have enabled me to develop my leadership skills. In addition, the culture here encourages collaboration where everyone supports one another to ensure they are maximising opportunities and referring roles.

There are many different facets to enjoy about the role however for me it’s the people who stand out. I’m fortunate to have made some great friends at Robert Walters and work with people whose goals align with mine. We all desire to achieve, and ensure we do the best possible job for both our candidates and clients. Our teams are also very autonomous, and we are always encouraged to grow our markets where we see an opportunity to do so. I am also thoroughly enjoying the management responsibilities within my role – it’s rewarding to see your team succeed. Lastly, I enjoy the fact I don’t have to relinquish doing what I love in a management role, remaining hands on with managing the recruitment process, finding people dream jobs and uncovering talent for clients.

My own intrinsic motivation to be successful drives me to continually give my all to my work and the culture at Robert Walters promotes attaining success in a very collaborative way. Knowing that I am part of someone’s career journey, and progressing my career at the same time gives me a real sense of fulfilment. In addition, I want to do a good job for Robert Walters as I feel looked after, supported and valued as a Recruiter, Manager, Mum and Friend.

My advice to anyone thinking of a career in recruitment, go and meet recruiters, come in to one of the Robert Walters offices and let us give you some insight into the day, what you will be doing, and the learning experiences you will get. It’s so much more than sending CVs and ‘getting people jobs’. You are part of a significant part of someone’s life, their career.
